Skin is the largest organ in our body. It is a sense organ, for the sense of touch (feel) and is quiet sensitive. There are many external factors and internal factors (allergens) to which the skin reacts, adversely. Some of the external factors (allergens) are pollution, pollen, latex, dyes, dust mites, pet dander, potent chemicals in make-ups, other lotions and creams, soaps, perfumes, body sprays etc., and the internal causes are found in the drinks and foods we consume, certain drugs may be allergic. It can also occur along with certain symptoms like headaches, congestion, cold with sneeze and runny nose and other illnesses in the inside of the body. It is also caused by some viruses and bacteria. Even the UV rays of the sun causes skin allergies.
Skin allergies may vary from just an itch and rashes to acne and eczema and/or hive and warts. Children – babies, kids and teens with their tender skin are more prone to skin allergies.
Here are some natural tips to avoid skin allergies, especially, in kids and teens:
– Wipe the drool of the baby dry for it can cause skin irritation;
– Use soaps and other toiletries that does not contain any potent fragrances, dyes, chemicals that are harsh on the skin. They dry the skin and break down the protective barrier;
– Resist from scratching that itch. Scratching only increases the severity of the raw, infected skin;
– Bathe in lukewarm water. Avoid bubble baths and make your bath short (3 to 5 minutes). Long baths dry the skin fast;
– After bathing it is always better to apply some soft moisturizing lotion, liberally, on the whole body while the skin is still moist;
– It is better to use cotton fabrics in hot weather that is soft on the skin, that absorb sweat and allows the skin to breathe.
– If you notice symptoms of skin allergy or infection like a red rash or sore etc., visit your doctor immediately;
– Eat more natural foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, foods that are rich in vitamins A, B & C. Avoid deep fried foods, processed and packed foods that contain chemicals like preservatives, taste enhancers, raising, leavening, gelling agents, colors, artificial flavors, extracts etc., etc;
– Keep stress under check. Exercise and meditate regularly to burst stress and to keep your body and mind fit and healthy;
– Avoid smoking and alcohol;
– When you go out in the sun use good sun screen and sun glasses;
Further, if you get some skin allergies like acne, warts, hive, eczema, sun burn, cold sores – keep the following tips to keep them under control and heal them faster:
ACNE:
Wash your face twice a day only with warm water and a mild soap. Do not scrub too much for it will irritate the skin. Do not squeeze pimples, for you will be pushing the infection deeper into the skin and the pimples will turn red and swell. The infection will spread. If you are using sunglasses clean them frequently to keep the oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose. If you have acne on your body wear loose cotton clothes and let your skin breathe. Remove make-up before going to bed. Use make-up that carries the words “noncomedogenic” and “nonacnegenic” on the label
SUNBURNS:
Use sunscreens with SPA (Sun Protection Factor) of atleast 15 and the one that blocks both UVA & UVB rays and again look for the words “noncomedogenic” and “nonacnegenic” on the label.
COLD SORES:
Do not share things like lip balm, tooth brushes, drinks etc., with people who have cold sores.
ECZEMA:
Do not use harsh detergents, heavily perfumed soaps, and lotions. Take short baths with warm water. Wear gloves while you wash dishes, car etc. Use non perfumed moisturizing creams, immediately, after a bath while the skin is still moist. Wear soft cotton clothes.
WARTS:
These are caused by virus (HPV – human papilloma virus). There is no way to prevent it. Just avoid contact with people who have it. If you get it do not rub, scratch or pick them. If you do, it will only spread.
STRETCH MARKS :
Are common in teens. These will fade over time on their own. In general, skin being a sensitive organ, that reacts to external allergens as well as allergens from inside, you have to be very conscious about what you use on your skin externally, like soaps, moisturizers, perfumes, body sprays, creams & lotions, make-up and other toiletries and also protect your skin from pollution, extreme weather conditions, dust, smoke etc. You must also be selective about what you eat and drink and the way you maintain your health and physical fitness, and stress also. Skin care is an integral part of overall healthcare. The skin is considered as the indicator of your health in general and in particular inside, because, symptoms of many illnesses of the organs inside, like that of the liver, stomach, intestines, lungs, kidney, blood etc., manifest on the skin as different conditions. Hence, if you want your skin to be healthy and good looking, keep yourself, body and mind, healthy and fit from tip to toe, inside and outside.
