Most toothpastes you use every day contains chemicals like sodium fluoride, glycerin and titanium dioxide. While fluoride is deemed safe by ADA, it’s linked to various health risks which may arise from its ingestion.
Though you may not purposely swallow the toothpaste, there’s always a chance of swallowing a bit whenever you brush your teeth. If you don’t want to take the risk, here are some natural toothpaste alternatives worth trying.
1. Baking soda
Mix baking soda and sea salt in the proportion of 3:1 for an effective tooth powder which whitens your teeth and removes plaque. Good Gums is a product containing baking soda, sea salt and additional herbs like peppermint, cinnamon, cranberry, vitamin C and tea tree for optimal gum health.
2. Sea salt
Also try dissolving some baking soda to water and apply to your teeth. Or just dip your toothbrush to sea salt and brush as normal. If your teeth are a bit sensitive, dissolve the sea salt in water before use.
3. Hydrogen peroxide
Add some hydrogen peroxide to your toothbrush and brush away so that the hydrogen peroxide whitens and cleans your teeth like normal toothpaste.
4. Herbal tooth powder
There are herbal tooth powders which help clean your teeth while healing oral inflammations and infections.
5. Dry or water brushing
Try dry or brushing with some water to remove dirt and plaque. Though it cleans your teeth, it’s not effective at removing odors.
6. Natural or tooth soaps
While natural soaps can be used for cleaning your teeth, it does taste like soap in your mouth. So try soap designed specifically to clean teeth.
7. Coconut oil
Coconut oil contains antibacterial and antifungal properties which maintains your oral health and gives you great smelling breath. Just swig a tablespoon in your mouth to clean out dirt and plaque and then brush with water.
8. Essential oils
There are various essential oils available at supermarkets and pharmacies to use to clean your teeth. However make sure you can take them orally before use. Peppermint is a good choice where you just have to use 2 drops on a wet toothbrush and brush as normal.
9. Basic toothpaste recipe
Try this basic toothpaste recipe, enough for single use. Mix more as required. Mix a teaspoon of baking powder with a drop of peppermint, clove or citrus essential oil, half teaspoon of finely ground sea salt and a few drops of water. Mix to a paste and then scoop onto your toothbrush and brush away.
10. Peppermint with coconut toothpaste
This toothpaste recipe contains coconut oil with essential oil to hide the flavor of other ingredients. For something sweeter, just add some stevia. Mix 6 teaspoons of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of warm liquid coconut oil, ¼ teaspoon hydrogen peroxide and 10 drops peppermint, clove or citrus pure essential oil.
Mix to a paste and add more baking soda if it’s too dry and more coconut oil if the paste is too runny. Taste to decide if you need more essential oil and store the mixture in an opaque container to store the hydrogen peroxide and use as normal.
